Boolean algebra calculator and simplifier with steps (every law named and verified)
A Boolean algebra calculator that shows every step: each rewrite names the law it applied, shows the expression before and after, and the final result carries an exact equivalence check against what you typed.
Paste an expression and the simplifier applies the laws of Boolean algebra (identity, null, idempotent, complement, absorption, De Morgan, distribution, the XOR identities and the elimination rules for implication, biconditional, NAND, NOR and XNOR) until none shortens it further. Each step is listed with the law's name, the rule instance (for example A AND TRUE = A), the fragment it rewrote and the whole expression after the step, so the list reads like a worked solution.
The result is labelled simplified, not minimal, on purpose. The rewriting chooses laws by a size measure and stops when no law applies; another sequence can reach a shorter form, and the engine never claims that a form is the smallest. For a sum of products with no removable term, use the Karnaugh map solver, which derives an irreducible cover for up to four variables and checks it on every row; for the canonical forms use the CNF and DNF converter.
Whatever the result, it is checked: the engine proves that the simplified expression agrees with the original on every assignment before it is shown, and the badge says so. If the check could not be completed, the result is marked as not verified rather than presented as equivalent.
Limits
- Truth tables up to 12 inputs (4096 rows).
- Karnaugh maps up to 4 effective variables.
- Normal forms up to 4096 terms; expressions up to 20000 characters and 64 inputs.
How to write expressions
Write inputs as names (member, A, credit_ok) and combine them with AND, OR, NOT, XOR, -> (implies), <-> (if and only if), NAND(a, b), NOR(a, b), XNOR(a, b), or the symbols &&, ||, !, ∧, ∨, ¬, ·, +, ′. Minterm and maxterm forms work too: Σm(A, B, C; 1, 3), ΠM(A, B; 0). Precedence: NOT, then AND, then XOR, then OR, then ->, then <->; use parentheses to be explicit. =, ==, ^, &, | and ~ are rejected with a repair.
Example
f := (A AND B) OR (A AND NOT B) OR (NOT A AND B) · output
Exact checks
Truth table (4 rows)
| # | A | B | f |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | FALSE | FALSE | FALSE |
| 1 | FALSE | TRUE | TRUE |
| 2 | TRUE | FALSE | TRUE |
| 3 | TRUE | TRUE | TRUE |
Plain-language reading
Beginnerf is true exactly when at least one of the following holds (several may hold):
1. both A and B are true
2. A is true and B is false
3. A is false and B is true
In every other case, f is false.
About the operators:
- OR is inclusive: it is true when at least one part is true, including when several are.
- AND is true only when all of its parts are true.
- NOT reverses a value: true becomes false and false becomes true.
Intermediatef is true exactly when at least one of the following holds (several may hold):
1. both A and B are true
2. A is true and B is false
3. A is false and B is true
In every other case, f is false.
Advancedf is true exactly when at least one of the following holds (several may hold) [inclusive disjunction ∨]:
1. both A and B are true [conjunction ∧]
2. A is true and B is false [conjunction ∧]
3. A is false and B is true [conjunction ∧]
In every other case, f is false.
Formal notation: (A ∧ B) ∨ (A ∧ ¬B) ∨ (¬A ∧ B)

Inputs (dict keys, declared order) and generated parameter names:
'A' -> input_A
'B' -> input_B
Outputs (declared order) and their functions:
'f' -> output_f(inputs)
Assumptions (the declared scope, checked by in_scope(inputs)):
none; every complete assignment is in scope.
Input contract:
Every required input must be exactly True or False (type(value) is bool). Missing
inputs, None, strings, integers (including 0 and 1), and keys that are not declared
inputs raise InputError before anything is evaluated, including inputs that a
short-circuiting operator would never read. Results are always bool.
Scope:
Decision functions raise OutOfScopeError when the inputs violate an assumption; an
out-of-scope assignment is never turned into a False result. Pass check_scope=False
to evaluate without the scope check, and use in_scope(inputs) to test it separately.
Usage:
import tangibool_model as model
model.evaluate({'A': False, 'B': False})
# -> {'f': False}
model.output_f({'A': False, 'B': False})
# -> False
model.evaluate({'A': 1, 'B': False})
# raises InputError: 1 is an int, not a bool

LaTeX
f = \left(A \cdot B\right) + \left(A \cdot \overline{B}\right) + \left(\overline{A} \cdot B\right)Questions
Does it show steps for expressions with XOR, implication or NAND?
Yes. Those operators are first rewritten with their elimination laws (for example A -> B becomes NOT A OR B), which appear as steps like any other, and the simplification continues on the AND, OR and NOT form.
The result is longer than mine. Is mine wrong?
Not necessarily. Check both with the equivalence checker: if they are equivalent, yours is a valid alternative the rewriting did not reach. If they are not, the checker gives the row where they differ.
Can it simplify an if-condition from my code?
Yes, write the condition with the engine's operators (&&, ||, ! are accepted) and name the sub-conditions as inputs, for example age_ok && (member || coupon) && !expired. The simplified form can go back into your code; the Python and SQL exports give it to you in those languages.
